Feeling the Need to Turn Inward

Posted by alphachinu on May 10, 2006

Hi all,

My family has some stuff we need to take care of. I will be back, but for now we need to turn inward towards each other. I appreciate all of the positive thoughts sent our way.

Thank you! Sooo much, imagine that I just gave you a big bear hug.

Bye for a bit,

Walk America: Fun for all!

Posted by alphachinu on May 7, 2006

There were many members of the SMCC community at today's Walk America event for the March of Dimes. Anna and her mother from Enrollment Services were there, along with Zee and three of her relatives, and Anne-Marie, Ben, Alesha, and Jennifer and her partner.

Good fun was had by all. Zee momentarily lost her brother, nephew, and neice in the crowd but quickly found them again. Anne-Marie and Ben walked together, while Allesha rode her bike. Anna and her mother walked as a pair, as did Jennifer and her partner.

There was a good variety of ages, abilities, and history represented in the walkers. Some of the walkers couldn't yet walk and rode in strollers while others were wishing for wheelchairs by the end of the walk. For some, this was their first walk with March of Dimes, while for others there was a thirty-year history of walking for March of Dimes.

The weather was beautiful. Sunny skies, with a cool breeze off of Back Cove, kept the walkers warm, but not overheated. With plenty of water and granola bars from the walk sponsors, the walkers were never without something to eat or drink. Coffee and pastries started the day, while soda and pizza finished the day.

The walk was beautiful and left me feeling a good burn throughout my body. I realized when my ankle continued to be in pain after 6 acetaminophen tablets, just how out of shape I am. It's amazing to me how being involved in cleaning the environment or walking for preemies makes me realize stuff about myself that I want to change. Interesting, hmm?

Blog Stats Monthly Update

Posted by alphachinu on May 2, 2006

You may be interested in some statistical analysis on data from the blog regarding number of views per day.

We have had 613 views for the past 30 days. The range is 0 to 65 per day. The average number of views is 20 per day. April 24, we had the most viewings. That was just after International Convention, so thank you to all of you who visited after getting home.

So, as my statistics teacher, Linda Misener, says, "What does all this mean?" Well, for a new blog, averaging twenty views per day is pretty cool. Also, having that strong of a following brings a great responsibility to the Chapter and the office of Public Relations to be active, strong, and good communicators.

You have my sincere wishes that this blog is responsibile and accountable to the membership of the Alpha Chi Nu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Please contact me with any suggestions for new content or to call me on something at alphachinusmcc@yahoo.com.

Earth Day Revisited

Posted by alphachinu on May 1, 2006

Ben, Jessica, and myself participated in the Willard Neighborhood Association, Beach Clean Up Day, along with other students from Southern Maine Community College, a few staff members of the college, and a few of our friends.

Our group collected one huge bag of trash and debris. There was a lot of cigarette butts and bits of styrofoam. Neither of which are nice on the beach. The styrofoam was hard to pickup because it kept breaking into littler pieces, making it hard to grab and hard to see. There was also a lot of broken plastic toys. The bits of red, blue, and yellow were easy to see against the soft tan of the sand.

I saw my first skeleton that was in its natural setting. Other skeletons I'v seen have all been made-up, either in a museum or on tv. I was amazed at how the bones were still connected and were easily identifyable as a particular animal. A bird had died; and, the bones were bleached and brittle, lying in the grass above the high tideline.

I vowed to use less styrofoam than I already do. I know that styrofoam won't go away; and, I don't want others cleaning up after me in ten or twenty years.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Cragen
